Prof. Christian Hermes from Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil will give a seminar entitled « Research advancements in household and light commercial refrigeration systems at POLO »

It will be held on Monday 30th of May at 1pm in room 0/429 in B52, 9 allée de la Découverte - 4000 Liège.

Abstract:
There is one refrigerator for every six people on Earth, which partly explains the large energy consumption associated with such appliances – approximately 6% of the electrical energy produced worldwide. In addition to the large number of refrigeration systems in operation, such a high energy demand is also due to their intrinsically low thermodynamic efficiency. This seminar assesses the results of recent investigations aiming at energy savings in the realm of household and light commercial refrigeration applications spanning from component-level phenomena to system-level optimization and performance breakdown. Up-to-date achievements from numerical and experimental studies focusing on capillary tubes and electric expansion valves, forced and natural-draft condensers and evaporators, compressor capacity control, cycle architectures, evaporator defrosting, ice making and blast freezing are also explored.

Resume:
Christian Hermes is a professor of mechanical engineering at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, where he serves as the director of the Cooling Systems Division of the POLO Research Laboratories for Emerging Technologies in Cooling and Thermophysics. He authored 2 international patents and more than 200 journal and conference papers on Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer focusing on HVAC-R applications. His current research interests are frost accretion, ice making, compact heat exchangers, fans, refrigeration systems and their components, and dynamics and controls of thermal systems.
