RESUME

Mechanical metamaterials are the subcategory of designer materials whose unprecedented macroscopic properties and functionalities come from a rational design of their geometries at the smaller scale. Some of these properties are negative Poisson’s ratio, shape-matching, action-at-a-distance and independent tailoring of elastic properties. In addition to the rational design of geometries, one can benefit from the recent emergence of advanced multi-material additive manufacturing in order to create multi-material metamaterials with properties spatially distributed in the structure. This can provide an additional design tool to obtain new properties otherwise impossible to achieve using single homogeneous materials. In this talk, we review some of these exciting properties obtained by rational design of geometry as well as material properties.
